Myth Busters Two - Mr Hux

Myth Busters Two

Natural perfume is better for you than synthetic.

This is a tricky myth to bust as there are pros and cons on both sides. Personal fragrance choices are deeply influenced by individual preferences. A common belief is that natural ingredients are safer than synthetic ones, but this is not always the case. Natural materials are highly concentrated and packed full of allergens. Some ingredients like Oakmoss, Rose Absolute, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang, are actually highly restricted in perfumery due to their skin sensitising effects. While these naturals provide depth and richness to scents, synthetics play a crucial role in maintaining fragrance structure and longevity.

If you opt for an all-natural fragrance, be prepared to compromise on strength and longevity; they tend to stay closer to the body and are less diffusive compared to scents that incorporate synthetics. Natural ingredients can add depth and therapeutic benefits to a fragrance, but they are highly allergenic and challenging to standardise, meaning no 2 perfume will be the exact same. Factors such as weather, growing conditions, and ethical concerns in production areas can lead to variations in natural perfumes. Synthetics, on the other hand, offer advantages like allergen control and consistent scent profiles. Synthetics allow the creation of deep, full and sophisticated fragrances with a longer shelf life. Although not proven some could say there are potential long-term safety and environmental considerations which should not be ignored.

In the world of fragrance, the choice between natural and synthetic ingredients involves a delicate balance of personal preference and practical considerations. Which ever fragrance you choose, know that it has been created to a standard and is safe to use. This applies of course to fragrances purchased from reputable sellers. So always do your research and buy smart.
